The name Lake Lanao was taken from the name of the historic and natural lake of Lanao, the third largest natural lake in the Philippines.
The Establishment of the Lake Lanao College Incorporated or LLCI is the fruit of the experience of the school owner and founding President Atty. Taharoden Ampaso Wahab, a man who was born by a farmer parents and sacrificed to finish his study. From his ten (10) years of experience in the different private schools in Marawi City from 1992-2002, he saw and felt the sadness and the loneliness of the orphan students. The orphan students are the first students to cry during the examination because of tuition fees. Some of them decided to stop instead of pursuing study because of poverty. To help the orphan students, the school owner established the Lake Lanao College Foundation Incorporated, the one and only school of the orphans in Marawi City and Lanao del Sur.

The Lake Lanao College was founded on October 14, 2002 when it was formally organized after the election of the members of its First Board of Trustees. On April 11, 2003, the school was duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission with Certificate of Company Registration No. CN200308080 after the endorsement made by the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to operate as a school.
Under the two endorsements signed by Dr. Mahid M. Mutilan, the Secretary of the Department of Education and Mr. Isnaji Isnani of the Commission on Higher Education, the school was authorized to operate a school offering Pre-school, Elementary Secondary or High school, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts major in Political Science and Shariah.
Its first operation as an academic institution started on June of the School Year 2003-2004 with total enrollees of eight hundred sixty two (862) pupils or students and thirty two (32) well trained faculty members.
On August 12, 2004, Dr. Mahid M. Mutilan, the Secretary of the Department of Education in the Autonomous Region in MuslimMindanao issued Government Recognition No. 11-002 series of 2004 to the Lake Lanao College Foundation Incorporated as duly Recognized Private Secondary School in the Philippines and authorized to operate Basic Secondary Education Curriculum from First Year to Fourth Year effective School Year 2004-2005.
On August 08, 2005, the Commission on Higher Education of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao issued Temporary Permits No. CASP-2005-9 s.2005, CASP-2005-10 s.2005 and CASP-2005-11 s.2005 for Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED), Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) and Bachelor of Arts (AB) respectively, to the Lake Lanao College Incorporated.
The Lake Lanao College is now occupying the three (3)-story building of the former Miah-Rolex Cinema Building at Cabili St., Lilod Madaya, Marawi City. It is the only school in the Philippines that speaks of the Maranao, the people of the Lake, because of its distinctive name.
Today, Lake Lanao College Foundation Incorporated is serving the young Filipino specially the orphan students at its best being one of the Top Performers Private Secondary Schools in Marawi City in both Academic and Non Academic activities.
